Business Illustration
I define business illustrations as (a series of) hand-drawn images or cartoons on a specific business or professional topic.
Often it is about making abstract topics more tangible, such as corporate values, leadership principles or guidelines. But sometimes also products or services, tools and methods.
Graphic recordings, target images and explainer videos are also forms of business illustration. I have described these separately on my website.
Typical application scenarios are:
My hand-drawn images convey individuality, honesty, a sense of humor, openness and empathy. I try to open up original perspectives or interpretations with the images, instead of just “illustrating”. My drawings combine stylistic elements from cartooning, product design and graphic recording.
In a briefing, a common understanding of the target group, tonality, style, format and number of illustrations is developed.
The basis of the illustrations is usually a text document with the content to be conveyed. While reading, I create initial image ideas for a joint exchange.
After we have selected the motifs, I work out the images. Mostly on iPad with ProCreate, but sometimes also analog with marker and watercolor. The pixel-based images are also vectorized on request.
Since ChatGPT also offers the possibility of creating images, all communication channels are flooded with AI-generated representations. However, most AI images have a similar style and often use cliché image ideas. What was initially impressive is therefore increasingly cheap or boring. Especially with series, there is often a lack of a common thread or a consistent visual language. If you want to stand out from the crowd today, you rely on artistic intelligence :-)
The price of an illustration depends on the quantity, size and content complexity, as well as the application scenario (usage rights). Depending on this, the costs range between €25 for a small vignette and €2500 for a large illustration with a high level of research and many details.
